Why add chapters?
Chapters increase watch time, appear in Google results as “key moments”, and let viewers jump straight to the part they care about. It is one of the simplest and most overlooked YouTube SEO levers.
The format YouTube expects
One line per chapter, in the form “00:00 Chapter title”. The first must be at 00:00, the following ones in order, with at least three chapters and ten seconds between each.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I enable chapters on my video?
- Paste the list into your video description, starting with 00:00. You need at least three timestamps in increasing order, at least ten seconds apart. YouTube then shows the chapters in the progress bar.
- How are chapters chosen?
- If the description already contains chapters, we read them. Otherwise we split the transcript into equal blocks and title each block with its most frequent words. You then adjust the count and the titles.
- Does it work on other people’s videos?
- Yes. It is handy for navigating a long video, a podcast or a lecture: each timestamp is clickable and opens the video at the right moment.
